Growing up in Taylorsville, I looked forward to this parade every single year. In fact, for 5 years straight I was in it with my best friends! Whether it was for Bennion Junior High Cheer or as a Taylorsville Chiron, it was so much fun being apart of something like this. Living in St. George I missed out on it every year and haven’t been back since high school! I was so excited to take Neal and Liam to see it. Neal did not share this excitement. He thinks Taylorsville is ghetto, which it is, and was worried he’d get shanked at any moment. While he watched our backs and made sure the ‘bad guys’ stayed away, Li Li and I had fun watching the floats go by. Liam’s favorite were the bands. He kept trying to run after them and walk behind them. He’d dance in the street and pick up candy. He’s not impartial to wrappers so he’d usually just throw the whole thing in his mouth as soon as he picked it up off the ground. I need to keep a close eye on that kid!
By 10 am it was already in the 90’s and all of us were dying of heat exhaustion. We tried keeping the kids hydrated and made them sit in the shade but it just wasn’t enough. Before the parade ended the Burks were done and we packed up and headed home. I’m hoping next year is a little cooler…but it was still worth it. The girls and I cheered on BJH cheer and our chirons! Proud day to be an alum.
