We woke up the following morning fully clothed from the day before. Romantic, right?
From all the traveling, jet lag, and exploring we did the day before we slept a good 8 hours and were ready for more. Neither of us could sleep, we were wide awake in PARIS, so what did we decide to go do............. see some more of the city!
I'm not kidding you, we were out of our hotel room by 4:45 and took a cab over to the Eiffel Tower. We couldn't wait to see it all lit up at night. We thought it would be so cool to be the only ones there and just get to soak in the beauty of this famous landmark all by ourselves...... it didn't quite go as planned.
We pulled up curbside to the Eiffel Tower, handed the cab driver some Euro, she gave us her card, and we were out the door. She drove off and we looked up. Pitch black! Nothing! We look down and see the card the cab driver handed us, in french, and with the phone number beginning in a 33-. So here we are, in front of the dark Eiffel Tower, absolutely alone!
We could not stop laughing about the situation. We were stuck there, it was barely 5am, we had a map, a dead phone, and a camera. Priceless. So we decided to make the best of it because, you know, we are in Paris and just start snapping away. Odd enough, it really was pretty cool to be there by ourselves, we got to walk around and take in this majestic view. Although it wasn't lit up, the sun was rising and it was just so beautiful! We spent a good half hour there by ourselves before we decided to hit up our next stop.
Arc de Triomphe!
From the Eiffel, we took about a 25 minute walk over to the Arc de Triomphe. I have no idea why it's so famous, other than how gorgeous it is, but it really is in the middle of just a HUGE roundabout. Definitely the biggest roundabout I've ever seen. This Arc was majestic and breathtaking. We couldn't take enough pictures to capture this thing. I do, however, want to research more about it to find out the history. That's definitely a takeaway for me this trip, research research research!
We proceeded to walk down the road to Rue de Champs, a famous shopping street. Of course, all closed, but we still enjoyed the views of things we'll never be able to afford. We walked hand in hand and greeted all the cafe workers as they began to open their shops.
Our walk took us straight to this, again, no idea the name of this monument but we were there! haha It led us straight to the Louvre which we were SO excited to go see!!!
This was right outside of the Louvre. We didn't realize that there was a major courtyard out front (huge garden area). We decided to sneak in (the gate was opened but only slightly.....). Well we walked through the entire thing, got to the end, and sure enough we were locked in. Don't worry though, I married a criminal and he made me jump the fence! We looked like a couple of hoodlums but I couldn't contain my giggles as he caught me on the other side.
We FINALLY made it to The Louvre and luck would have it that it was closed! Serves us right for our lack of research on the sights we wanted to see. Regardless, we were able to walk the grounds and look in the windows, and take lots of pictures.
This was another favorite sight of mine. All I could think about was The DaVinci Code. We soaked in the sights and took our time around the grounds. The courtyard was gorgeous (I'm sure the inside is incredible). We're already planning a trip back so we can actually go inside the museum!
And to finish off the trip, we ended it with our favorite, MORE CREPES!!! I seriously dream about the crepe that I experienced in this picture. It was a toasted nutella crepe, to die for!!!! We ate our crepes as we made the trek back to the hotel to grab our bags and get on the road. We had a long trip ahead of us.
So we had the choice to stay another night, pay for another hotel WAY out of our price range, and fly home economy class in the morning............OR
leave that afternoon and fly home first class business elite. You know? The area that has seats that lay down! And they serve you food the entire time, from a special menu!
I got to sit, for ten hours, and do absolutely nothing and it was wonderful. I watched The Hunger Games, I read my new book, I had a 4 course meal and then some.... yeah it was the perfect way to end our trip. I can't imagine ever flying international and NOT being in business elite.
So really- Neal outdid himself for this anniversary and I have NO idea what's in store for us next year. It's my turn to plan. Any ideas?!
If you could surprise your husband and take him anywhere in the world (that delta flies, too haha), where would it be and why? :)
Beautiful pictures! The Arc de Triomphe is a monument to the French soldiers who fought and died during the French Revolution (1790's) and the Napoleonic Wars (1790's - 1815). It also houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a French soldier killecd in World War I. It's basicaly an homage to French victories and those who died obtaining it. Love your blog! - Natalie
